5 Foods That May Accelerate Visible and Physical Aging

Key points:

  • Aging is more than skin deep, it’s a biological process that impacts your cells, tissues, collagen, elastin, joints, and blood vessels.

  • In addition to choosing foods high in antioxidants, you must understand which foods and ingredients accelerate aging.

  • Support cellular health by keeping high-sugar, high-fat, high-sodium, ultra-processed foods, and alcohol to a minimum.

The anti-aging conversation revolves around topicals and skincare treatments. However, nutrition contributes to how you age internally and externally. Below are the foods that age you the most. Aim to keep them at 10% or less of your diet.

What Is Aging?

Aging is a natural process, where your cell’s ability to maintain, repair, and replicate slows down. This contributes to declining whole-body health and the visible signs of aging. Genetics, lifestyle, environment, and overall health contribute to cellular health.

We’re living longer than ever with a higher quality of life, in part because we’re more informed than ever. When it comes to nutrition, don’t just prioritize foods high in antioxidants. You must also limit foods that damage collagen and increase oxidative stress.

Oxidative Stress Is the Top Cause of Cellular Aging

  • Oxidative stress occurs when you have too many free radicals/toxins in your body. It’s a key driver of low-grade chronic inflammation (aka. inflammaging).

  • Cellular aging is a natural process. There’s no stopping it, but it accelerates with oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.

The 5 Foods and Ingredients That Age You Most

1. Ultra-Processed Foods

Ultra-processed foods aren’t just low in nutrients, they’re high in most of the aging ingredients below. This includes sugar, sodium, trans fat, preservatives, hydrogenated oils, and artificial ingredients. UPFs prematurely shorten the telomeres that protect your chromosomes. Telomeres shorten with age, but shorten faster with oxidative stress.

2. Foods That Spike Blood Glucose

Sugar and refined carbohydrates cause a rapid spike in your blood glucose levels. Glucose is your cell’s primary energy source. Problems arise when you consume too much sugar. If you’re like the average American, you consume 2 times (or more) sugar than your body requires per day.

Even when from natural sources, including fruit and honey, consuming too much sugar causes internal glycation. Glycation damages collagen and elastin, which accelerates the visible signs of aging. Declining collagen and elastin stiffen joints and blood vessels and weaken intestinal walls.

3. Fats and Oils

Trans fats, fatty meat, hydrogenated oils, and diets high in saturated fats pose a range of health risks. This includes increasing your risk for cardiovascular health concerns and chronic internal inflammation.

You can’t see internal inflammation, but you may experience:

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Brain fog

  • Digestive issues

  • Weight gain

  • Delayed wound healing

  • Decreased immunity

4. Overconsuming Alcohol

Casual drinking or drinking a bit too much on holidays, vacations, or special occasions won’t age you. However, daily drinking is problematic on many levels that contribute to accelerated aging.

Excessive drinking:

  • Degrades collagen

  • Shortens telomeres

  • Increases inflammation

  • Disrupts sleep

  • Damages the liver

  • Dehydrates your body

  • And more

5. High-Sodium Foods

Sodium enhances flavor and increases the shelf life of many processed foods. It’s an electrolyte your body requires, but the average American consumes about 1,000 mg more than they need per day. On average, 70% of salt comes from fast food, restaurants, and pre-packaged foods.

Consuming too much salt causes cellular dehydration. This differs from standard dehydration. Cellular dehydration causes your body to retain fluids to dilute the sodium in your cells. Chronic cellular dehydration ages you by stressing your blood vessels and cardiovascular system.
