Corporate Nutrition Workshops: The Science Behind the Afternoon Slump
Nutrition workshops educate your team on how lunch and snack choices influence the mid-day slump.
Adding nutritional information to your corporate wellness event teaches your team how to select and pair nutrient-dense foods.
Dietitian-led workshops don’t promote diet culture, they promote sustainable cognitive and physical energy.
The post-lunch slump isn’t a myth; it’s a biological response that occurs every day like clockwork. Between the hours of 1 pm and 3 pm, office chatter quiets down, but not because everyone’s focused. Your team doesn’t engage much in afternoon meetings, but it’s not because they lack motivation. A few more pots of coffee are brewed, but it’s not a sign of widespread poor sleep. Your team’s energy resources are depleted.
Adding a live or virtual nutrition workshop to your corporate wellness event calendar educates your team on how to promote all-day energy.
The Science Behind the Mid-Day Slump
Sleep, stress, sitting all day, and individual health play a role in your team’s cognitive performance and physical energy levels. What we often forget to factor in is the role nutrition plays in maintaining energy and productivity.
Convenience often wins out when it’s time for lunch. This includes fast food, vending machine snacks, and high-refined-carb meals in casual dining restaurants. Even the options marketed as “healthy” are often low in calories, fat, or sugar, and high in refined carbs. Meals high in refined carbohydrates cause blood glucose to spike, then plummet. This is why productivity slows, problem-solving declines, and your team looks and feels tired an hour or two after lunch.
Sitting or Standing Still Adds to The Slump
Even with a nutrient-dense lunch, sitting or standing all day adds to the collective fatigue. When we sit or stand without much movement, our heart rate slows, circulation drops, and we take shallow breaths. These factors combined decrease the amount of energizing oxygen that circulates throughout our bodies.
Since we don’t burn much energy when sitting, our body produces less lipoprotein lipase (LPL). This enzyme aids the body in converting fat into energy.
Quick Pick-Me-Ups Make Matters Worse
Caffeine and sweet treats provide a quick boost of energy but leave your team feeling worse than before.
How Nutrition Minimizes the Afternoon Slump
Nutrient-dense foods keep blood sugar stable, which supports sustainable energy levels. Most adults weren’t taught much about nutrition beyond the food pyramid in school. Or the conflicting information we hear from toxic diet culture. As such, most of what we eat is what our family or culture eats.
A tailored nutritional workshop teaches your team:
Evidence-based nutritional guidance that supports fast-paced lifestyles.
How to build slump-proof food pairings for breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
Fast, easy, and delicious meals and snacks that require minimal preparation.
The importance of hydration for maintaining physical and cognitive performance.
What foods to choose when dining out, traveling, or on-the-go.
How strategic nutrition supports mood, stress management, and mental clarity.
What to eat, drink, and do when the slump hits.
