How a GLP-1 Meal Plan Minimizes Side Effects and Optimizes Your Health

Key points:

  • The most common side effects of GLP-1 drugs.

  • How nutrition influences GLP-1 side effects.

  • How dietary coaching supports health and GLP-1 success.

In the excitement of finally losing weight you’ve carried for years, come the side effects. From nausea to feeling weak, being low on energy, newfound skin sensitivity, and hair shedding. With the proper dietary changes, most of these issues are rapidly reduced. In my monthly Nourish & Thrive support group, you’ll learn how to help your body adjust to your weight loss medications. This includes a GLP-1 meal plan, group coaching, and ongoing tools and support.

Why You Feel Fatigued and Weak on GLP-1s?

If your diet remains high in ultra-processed foods, you’re not only consuming fewer calories, you’re consuming fewer nutrients. Since you feel fuller faster, you may also consume less water. If you feel weak or tired, it may be due to dehydration and low levels of protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. So, the foods you choose while on GLPs have never been more important.

What is sarcopenia?

Any time you lose weight, approximately 2/3 of the weight you lose is fat, and 1/3 is lean muscle mass. This is referred to as sarcopenia. Increasing your protein intake minimizes muscle loss, and adding strength training to your daily routine builds new muscles.

Why Your Hair Sheds on Weight Loss Medications?

GLP-1 agonists often trigger short-term hair shedding, known as telogen effluvium. This is due to a combination of re-regulating hormones and nutrient deficiency that shocks your hair follicles into “resting phase”. Shedding typically stops between 2 and 4 months. Proper nutrition helps minimize shedding.

Why Is Your Skin More Sensitive When Taking Weight Loss Medications?

Hypersensitive skin is rare, but mild to moderate skin irritation results from dehydration and nutrient-deficiency. This includes sensitivity to skincare products, at-home skincare devices, and spa treatments that you’ve used for years. Increasing hydration and transitioning to a GLP-1 meal plan decreases this sensitivity for most. If sensitivity doesn’t improve, schedule an appointment with your esthetician or dermatologist.

Why You Feel Nauseous or Constipated on GLP-1 Agonists?

Weight loss medications slow digestion, often leading to nausea, with or without constipation. On the flip side, some experience diarrhea. For most, these side effects are short-term, but in rare cases they’re prolonged. Adjusting what you eat may ease your digestive discomfort.

  • Nausea: By slowing gastric emptying, you feel fuller faster and longer, but often experience bloating and nausea. GLPs also stimulate the area of your brain that controls vomiting. As your body adjusts to your new medication, digestive symptoms often improve. This is why the dose starts low and gradually increases.

  • Constipation: The longer food remains in your digestive tract, the more gut motility decreases, increasing constipation. When combined with dehydration and decreased fiber intake, constipation worsens.

How GLP-1 Dietary Coaching Supports Health and Nutrition?

Dietary coaching ensures you eat a balanced range of protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Many women understand that they need to adjust their nutrition while on GLPs, but aren’t sure how to create balanced meals. Especially with their drastically reduced appetite. I offer dietitian-approved meal plans for all nutritional and health restrictions. This includes delicious options the entire family will enjoy!
